Project Hail Mary (Lakehouse Edition)
Read Project Hail Mary for context.
Lyland Lace the Leopard left the Foresthood School cheerfully. He was so happy to end his day as a teacher and go to sleep. However, Chatt the Cheetah had other plans.
“Lace?” She asked.
“Sup,” he answered.
“Do you know about the stuff eating our trees?”
“Ya it’s gonna kill us all.”
“Ok cool. Come to my lab right now.”
“Wait-”
“That wasn’t a question.”
Lace slowly walked with her. She showed him a lab. “Get working,” she said. “Discover something.”
“…’Kay.”
He worked in the lab for a whole day straight before he figured out….HOW IT BREEDS! “OMG I FIGURED OUT SOEMTHING!” Before he could even finish his sentence, Chatt’s guards threw him in an aircraft carrier! He was in a meeting room with a bunch of scientists.
“So what’d you figure out?” They said in perfect unison, and then glared at each other.
He pulled out a dry erase marker and a whiteboard from his pocket. He drew his experiment.
“Okay…..make a raft powered by this thingy ok?”
“What?”
“Did I pronounce it wrong?”
“No, Chatt.”
So he and his new besties for life, the other scientists, started their super exciting project, making a raft powered by what they liked to call Astro-Sap. Astro-Sap was destroying their trees. They planned to send a raft across the lake to the other side, where there were no infected trees. The only problem?
DUN DUN DUN! The raft wouldn’t have enough Astro-Sap Powered triple A batteries to go both ways. They would send a tiny raft home with their findings….AND DIE ON THE OTHER SIDE.
“I am so happy I am not on that trip,” Lace said.
FORESHADOWING FORESHADOWING FORESHADOWING!
So later that day Chatt called and was like, “Ok should I put people in comas?”
And Lace is like, “context please.”
“On the raft. It’ll take three years for them (thirteen years for us cause relativity) and they’ll go insane. So should we put them in comas?”
“Um yes. COMAS FOREVER.” He laughed. “Is that even a question?”
So the next day he and all his new besties were watching all the cool people who were gonna save humanity come in. They all had really cool entrances.
“Our commander is…..COMMANDER KAO THE KANGAROO!” Chatt said.
They all clapped.
“Our engineer is….NILYUKHINA THE NARWHAL!”
More clapping!
“And our scientist is….PUBOIS THE POLAR BEAR!”
They clapped more. PuBois walked over to Lace. “My role is super important to the mission,” he said. “I sure hope I don’t die before the mission.”
FORESHADOWING FORESHADOWING FORESHADOWING!
Anyway for a couple months Lace and his old besties and his three new besties were so ready for the mission! Lace and Chatt were talking about boring mission stuff when they heard a BOOM!
OMG, one of Lace’s besties texted him. PUBOIS IS DEAD. Sad face emoji.
WHAT??? He texted.
LOL WERE ALL DOOMED! Crying-laughing emoji.
So everyone was sitting in one of their meeting rooms and Lace is like, “So who’s the new scientist?”
“You.”
“What?”
“YOU. Y-O-U.”
“No thanks.”
“NOT A QUESTION.”
“Aww.”
And so it was that Lace found himself on the ship. But there was a catch! Nilyukhina and Kao were dead! Lace sighed. “This’ll be hard now.”
And it was. Lace got off at the other side of the lake. There he saw A TALKING ROCK!
“A minor / E minor / G major 5th!” It chirped.
So Lace is like, “Good thing I brought Duolingo.”
And soon he and the Rock-Thing can communicate. He calls it Rocky because it is rocky. He finds out Rocky is from a different planet! GASP EMOJI!!!!!!!
Rocky has come here to find out why its trees aren’t dying also. Lace and Rocky decide to team up, because TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAMWORK!
Lace even got more Astro-Sap Triple A Batteries to get home! Yay!
And eventually they found out…OMG ASTROSAP HAD A PREDATOR THERE! They decided to call it Tautreeba. And they had to bring it home to their forests.
There was just one problem……
Tautreeba couldn’t survive back in their home forests!
They decided to breed the Tautreeba so it could survive there. And so after the original Tautreeba were old and wrinkly and had hundreds of grandchildren that had grandchildren that had grandchildren, Lace and Rocky took some Tautreeba each and went home after exchanging phone numbers and promising to text.
“I sure hope the Tautreeba will not escape my raft,” Lace said.
FORESHADOWING FORESHADOWING FORESHADOWING!
OMG…the Tautreeba escaped! Who could’ve guessed that they evolved to escape the ship? Lace now had two choices…send Tautreeba home in a Mini-Raft, save Rocky, and go to Rocky’s forest, or go home.
Duh, he chose to save Rocky, because THATS WHAT FRIENDSHIP IS FOR!
So he and Rocky got all his Tautreeba back in his ship, and headed for Rocky’s forest. Lace lived there forever and both forests were saved!
